NFL and American Heart Association Team Up to Teach Life-Saving CPR at Super Bowl LIX

The American Heart Association's Nation of Lifesavers™ Mobile CPR Unit will provide potentially life-saving training to football fans at this year's Super Bowl Experience in New Orleans. The initiative, running from February 5-8 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, represents the fifth collaboration between the NFL and the American Heart Association at major football events.

The significance of this partnership extends beyond the sporting event itself. With approximately 9 out of 10 people who experience cardiac arrest outside of hospitals not surviving—partly due to delayed CPR response—this public health initiative addresses a critical need. The training focuses on Hands-Only CPR, which research shows can be as effective as traditional CPR in the crucial first minutes of emergency response.

This initiative gains additional relevance following Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin's cardiac arrest incident, who now leads a class of NFL player ambassadors promoting CPR awareness. The program's reach extends beyond the Super Bowl, with the American Heart Association having partnered with more than half of NFL teams to provide CPR education to players, staff, and community members.

The collaboration also includes special focus on addressing health disparities, with New Orleans-based HBCU scholars participating in advanced CPR training during Black History Month. The initiative aligns with the American Heart Association's ambitious goal to double the survival rate for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests by 2030.

With nearly three out of four cardiac arrests occurring in homes, this public health initiative addresses a critical need for widespread CPR knowledge. The training program's presence at one of America's largest sporting events represents a strategic approach to reaching and educating large segments of the population in life-saving techniques.
