NFL Prospects Learn Life-Saving CPR Skills at Senior Bowl Event

The American Heart Association partnered with the Reese's Senior Bowl to provide essential CPR training to potential NFL draft prospects and coaches during the Senior Bowl Community Service Day in Mobile, Alabama. The training comes at a crucial time when nine out of ten people who experience cardiac arrest outside of hospitals do not survive, largely due to delayed CPR response.

The training session focused on Hands-Only CPR and the use of automatic external defibrillators (AED), critical skills that can double or triple survival chances when administered promptly. This initiative gains particular significance given that approximately 23,000 people under 18 experience cardiac arrest outside hospitals annually, with nearly 40% being sports-related incidents.

The program's national ambassador is Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, a Senior Bowl alumni who survived a highly publicized cardiac arrest during a Monday Night Football game in January 2023. His incident highlighted the vital importance of immediate CPR response in saving lives.

This training aligns with the broader Smart Heart Sports Coalition, launched by the NFL in collaboration with major sports leagues and the American Heart Association. The coalition aims to implement life-saving cardiac emergency policies across all 50 states, particularly focusing on high school student-athletes.

With nearly three-quarters of cardiac arrests occurring in homes, this training of high-profile athletes and coaches serves a dual purpose: preparing them for emergencies and raising public awareness about the importance of CPR knowledge. The initiative represents a significant step in creating more capable first responders within communities and potentially reducing the current high mortality rate from cardiac arrests.
