The New York Giants Foundation has launched a comprehensive cardiac emergency preparedness initiative, providing 12 local New Jersey school districts with critical cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) training resources. The program, conducted in collaboration with the American Heart Association, aims to empower students, faculty, and staff with life-saving skills.
According to American Heart Association data, nearly 90% of individuals experiencing cardiac arrest outside hospitals die, often due to delayed CPR intervention. By equipping schools with comprehensive training kits, the initiative seeks to dramatically improve emergency response capabilities. Each participating school received a CPR in Schools kit containing 10 Hands-Only CPR manikins, 10 AED training tools, and curriculum materials.
The training addresses a critical public health need, particularly among young people. The American Heart Association reports approximately 23,000 individuals under 18 experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrests annually, with nearly 40% occurring during sports-related activities. Compression-only CPR, which can be learned quickly, can double or triple survival chances during cardiac emergencies.
This initiative aligns with the NFL's Smart Heart Sports Coalition, which advocates for evidence-based policies to prevent fatal cardiac outcomes among high school students. By providing targeted training and resources, the Giants Foundation is helping create a more prepared and responsive community emergency network.
