Synecdoche Works is set to premiere a provocative new multimedia play that blends digital gaming and theatrical storytelling. 'The Fate of the Online Cow,' written by playwright kanishk pandey, will explore complex themes of digital labor, oppression, and self-determination through an innovative Minecraft-based performance.
Directed by Marissa Joyce Stamps, a recipient of the 2023 Princess Grace Playwriting Award, the production features Deja Rion as the Cow, a character forced to stream Minecraft for her owners' financial gain. The play uses an active stream chat and immersive game design by media designer Lauren Serafica to critique the dynamics of digital content creation and exploitation.
The narrative follows the Cow's journey from resigned streamer to a character contemplating revolution against her oppressive circumstances. By employing Minecraft as a storytelling medium, the play offers a unique lens into contemporary issues of digital labor, agency, and economic power structures.
Performances will run from April 25-27, 2025, at The Studio at The Chain in New York City, presenting audiences with a groundbreaking exploration of technology, performance, and social dynamics.
