Contemporary Danish artist Thyra Hilden will debut a groundbreaking exhibition titled 'Ride the Tiger' at Gallery MAXUS101, featuring a series of innovative works that challenge traditional artistic representations of feminine power.
Hilden's new collection transforms canvas into dynamic, three-dimensional forms resembling vulva shapes, moving beyond passive representation to create powerful visual statements about female agency. By cutting, bending, and reconstructing her materials, she generates objects that defy conventional categorization between painting and sculpture.
Gallery owner Anthon Maxus describes the exhibition as continuing a significant artistic tradition, drawing connections to influential artists like Hannah Wilke, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Louise Bourgeois. The works draw inspiration from the Hindu goddess Durga, symbolizing feminine strength and creative energy.
Previously known for her international 'City on Fire' projects, which digitally set cultural monuments ablaze, Hilden now channels her exploration of dialectical forces into more intimate, materialized expressions. The exhibition includes both large-scale canvas works and smaller wall objects, demonstrating the artist's versatility and conceptual depth.
By presenting vulva forms in gold and manipulated canvas, Hilden creates a visual language that is both aesthetically compelling and conceptually innovative. Her work challenges viewers to reconsider traditional artistic representations of feminine identity and power.
The exhibition runs from March 28 to May 11, 2025, at Gallery MAXUS101 in Copenhagen, offering audiences a provocative exploration of feminine creative force and artistic transformation.
