Cherished Mom, a national nonprofit focused on maternal mental health, will host its 5th Annual Pregnancy & Postpartum Psychosis (PPP) Awareness Day on May 2, 2025, highlighting a critical yet often overlooked health issue affecting new mothers.
Postpartum psychosis is a severe perinatal mood disorder impacting 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 deliveries. The condition can emerge suddenly with symptoms including hallucinations, delusions, confusion, and rapid mood swings. Without timely intervention, PPP carries significant risks, with an estimated 5% suicide rate and 4% infanticide rate.
Founder Kristina Dulaney emphasized the importance of awareness, noting that behind these statistics are real families experiencing profound challenges. The organization aims to break the stigma surrounding maternal mental health and provide pathways to early diagnosis and treatment.
Healthcare professionals, community partners, and individuals are encouraged to participate by sharing educational resources and amplifying awareness. By increasing understanding of PPP, the organization hopes to prevent unnecessary tragedies and ensure mothers receive critical support during a vulnerable period.
Early identification and appropriate medical intervention can significantly improve outcomes for mothers experiencing postpartum psychosis. Cherished Mom's ongoing campaign seeks to transform public understanding and provide compassionate resources for affected families nationwide.
