New Community Campus in Knightdale to Provide Comprehensive Support for Homeless Families

A new community development project in Knightdale promises to dramatically enhance support services for homeless families through an innovative facility called The Garden. The project, backed by CAHEC New Markets' New Markets Tax Credit investment, will provide comprehensive support for women and children experiencing situational homelessness.

The Garden will substantially increase the capacity of Raleigh Rescue Mission's current homeless support infrastructure. While the existing facility can accommodate only 60 women and 40 men nightly, the new campus will feature 101 rooms capable of serving 300-350 women and children annually. The facility goes beyond traditional shelter models by offering a holistic approach to recovery.

Key features of The Garden include a Children's Learning Center with capacity for 150 children, meal services providing 182,500 meals annually, and a comprehensive New Life Plan. This program provides residents with job training, mental and physical health services, and financial literacy classes, with the goal of helping individuals secure living wage employment, reliable transportation, and stable housing.

Brian Oxford, Director of Community Capital at CAHEC, emphasized the project's transformative potential, stating that The Garden represents more than a shelter—it is a community designed to empower women and children seeking a fresh start. Future development phases will introduce transitional housing apartments and a gymnasium, further expanding the facility's supportive capabilities.

The project also represents a broader vision of community development. Adjacent parcels are slated for market-rate single-family homes and a commercial hub, potentially creating an integrated, mixed-income neighborhood that prioritizes inclusion and opportunity.

By leveraging New Markets Tax Credits, the project demonstrates how strategic investments can address critical social challenges while fostering economic development in underserved communities.
