The Cayenne Wellness Center and Children's Foundation, alongside the Global Alliance of Sickle Cell Disease Organizations (GASCDO), are set to host a 24-hour global virtual marathon on June 19, 2025, in celebration of World Sickle Cell Day 2024. This event, titled 'Global Action, Local Impact: Empowering Communities for Effective Self-Advocacy,' seeks to bring together individuals from across the globe to raise awareness, foster education, and provide support for those affected by sickle cell disease and trait.
Featuring educational sessions led by healthcare professionals, inspiring narratives from patients and caregivers, and a talent showcase, the marathon underscores the resilience and creativity within the sickle cell community. Dr. Carolyn Rowley of Cayenne Wellness Center emphasized the event's role in showcasing the community's strength and the critical need for enhanced support systems worldwide.
Biba Tinga of GASCDO highlighted the marathon as a platform for learning and inspiration, aiming to spotlight the community's vibrancy on a global stage. This initiative represents a significant step towards bridging gaps in care and advocacy, offering a model for how global collaboration can lead to meaningful local impact.
