Sandhills Classical Christian School in Pinehurst is pioneering the use of a new safety technology that promises to revolutionize how schools respond to emergencies. Active Defender, a North Carolina-based startup, has developed wearable panic buttons that connect directly to emergency response systems, offering a swift and efficient way to alert authorities during critical situations. This innovation is particularly significant in an era where school safety is a paramount concern for educators, parents, and students alike.
The platform, created by Jim Boyte, a retired Department of Defense software engineer, is designed to empower teachers and school staff by providing them with the tools to act immediately in the face of danger. By facilitating mission-critical communication with a single touch, Active Defender aims to reduce response times and potentially save lives. The system's debut at the School Leadership Safety Summit on June 16 will include a live demonstration, showcasing its capabilities to school leaders from across the region.
Active Defender's recent recognition with an NC IDEA SEED Grant underscores the potential of this technology to scale and make a meaningful impact on school safety beyond Moore County. With the platform already in use in several schools across North and South Carolina, its expansion across the Southeast could mark a significant step forward in ensuring safer learning environments. The integration of such technology highlights the growing importance of innovative solutions in addressing the complex challenges of school safety today.
