The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Chicago's 25th Annual 'A Mind Is…' Gala marked a triumphant return to its original Black and White theme, raising an impressive $1,005,600 for student scholarships. The event, held at The Geraghty, was a night of nostalgia and glamour, attended by over 500 guests, including Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who delivered welcome remarks. The gala's success underscores the community's unwavering support for education, especially in times of governmental funding cuts.
Lisa Rollins, UNCF Regional Development Director, expressed gratitude towards the generous contributions that will enable the organization to continue its mission of supporting students. The evening was emceed by Anita Blanton of FOX TV 32 and Trey White from WGCI-FM, adding a touch of celebrity to the proceedings. Sherina Edwards, Gala Chair and alumna of Howard University and Spelman College, emphasized the importance of the event in providing resources for the next generation of college students.
The gala also honored two notable supporters: Ariel Investments received the 'A Mind Is…' Corporate Award, and Nadia Rawlinson, Co-owner and Operating Chair of The Chicago Sky, was awarded the 'A Mind Is…' Trailblazer Award. These recognitions highlight the critical role of allies in advancing educational opportunities for students of all ethnicities.
A highlight of the evening was the live auction led by auctioneer Gee Scott, featuring luxurious getaway packages. The auction's proceeds will directly fund college scholarships, furthering UNCF's goal of making higher education accessible. Testimonials from scholarship recipients Cori' Anne White and Jamal D. Chambers brought personal stories of the impact of UNCF's support, illustrating the tangible benefits of the community's generosity.
Entertainment was provided by the R&B group After 7, whose performance of hits like 'Heat of the Moment' and 'Ready or Not' added a celebratory note to the evening. The event not only celebrated a milestone but also reinforced UNCF's revised motto, emphasizing the value of investing in young minds. With 541 scholarships awarded to Illinois students from 2022 to 2023, the gala's success is a testament to the power of community support in overcoming educational funding challenges.
