The International Whisky Competition Committee announced the results of its 16th edition, with Kavalan Distillery's Solist Fino Sherry Single Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky taking the prestigious Whisky of the Year title. This victory is notable as it represents the first time a non-Scottish distillery has won the competition's highest honor, showcasing the global expansion and diversity of whisky craftsmanship.
The competition, held in Louisville, Kentucky, at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience and the Louisville Thoroughbred Society, brought together the finest whiskies worldwide for a rigorous judging process. The event's double-blind tasting format ensured impartiality, with no information about the whisky's origin, category, or ABV provided to judges.
Kavalan's winning whisky, produced in Yilan County, Taiwan, achieved an outstanding score of 97.04 points. The distillery also earned the Distillery of the Year title, with an average score of 92.78 points. These accolades underscore Kavalan's rising prominence in the global whisky industry and Taiwan's emerging role as a producer of world-class spirits.
Mr. Yu-Ting Lee, Chairman of King Car Kavalan, expressed pride in the achievement, stating it reaffirms Taiwan's place in the whisky world. Max A. Solano, IWC Competition Director, praised the Solist Fino Sherry for its balance and complexity, describing it as a world-class expression that distinguished itself among competitors.
