The DFW Car & Toy Museum has recently expanded its collection with the addition of a 1962 Lamborghini 1R Tractor, a significant piece that predates the brand's legendary supercars. This tractor, meticulously restored in Italy and now part of the Ron Sturgeon Collection, offers a glimpse into Lamborghini's origins as a manufacturer of agricultural machinery.
Founded in 1948 by Ferruccio Lamborghini, Lamborghini Trattori was established to meet the post-war demand for durable and reliable farming equipment in Italy. The 1R model, produced during the 1960s, is a testament to the brand's engineering prowess, featuring a 1,462cc diesel twin engine that delivers 26 horsepower. Its mechanical simplicity and efficiency are highlighted by a three-speed dual-range manual transmission and rear portal axle.
Brian Sturgeon, Director of the DFW Car & Toy Museum, emphasizes the importance of this acquisition, stating, "This Lamborghini 1R Tractor is a rare opportunity to explore the brand's humble beginnings. It's a beautifully engineered machine that showcases Lamborghini's journey from agricultural fields to the pinnacle of automotive design."
The tractor's restoration includes authentic Lamborghini badging, 1R decals, and functional headlights and taillights, along with a hinged engine cover. Its operational features, such as rear drum brakes, a hand throttle, and a Veglia oil pressure gauge, reflect the practical yet innovative design of early Lamborghini machinery.
Visitors to the DFW Car & Toy Museum can now view this historic tractor alongside over 200 cars and thousands of collectibles. The museum, located at 2550 McMillan Parkway, Fort Worth, TX, offers free admission and parking, making it an accessible destination for automotive enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
This addition not only enriches the museum's collection but also serves as an educational tool, illustrating the evolution of a brand that has become synonymous with luxury and performance. The 1962 Lamborghini 1R Tractor stands as a bridge between Lamborghini's agricultural heritage and its future as a leader in the automotive industry.
