HPM Celebrates Milestone in Construction of Bank Independent Stadium at University of North Alabama

The construction of Bank Independent Stadium at the University of North Alabama (UNA) has reached a pivotal milestone with the topping out ceremony, signaling the placement of the final structural beam. Managed by Birmingham-based HPM, this $65 million project is set to transform the athletic landscape in Florence, Alabama, by providing a dedicated stadium for UNA's football, baseball, and soccer teams, along with the marching band. The stadium, anticipated to open in Fall 2026, will also serve as a venue for concerts and community events, enriching the local culture and economy.

Bank Independent Stadium will feature Bobby Wallace Field and a three-level press tower equipped with modern amenities, including concessions, restrooms, suites, and a club level. A unique 'home tunnel' will connect the home locker room to Flowers Hall, enhancing the athlete experience. The project redevelops the existing athletic complex, integrating the UNA turf practice field, Mike D. Lane Field, and band practice field into a cohesive design. Additionally, a 2,760 square foot video board will be installed, starting construction soon at the northeast end of the stadium, to elevate game days and events.

Matt Ernst, Senior Project Manager at HPM, expressed pride in bringing UNA's vision to life, highlighting the collaborative effort with design and construction partners. The project's complexity required meticulous planning, including the sequencing of construction packages and a mass excavation that recessed the football field 15 feet below grade, utilizing the excavated dirt as fill for the future baseball field. This innovative design ensures 360-degree concourse access, offering fans unobstructed views of the action.

Dr. Josh Looney, Director of Athletics at UNA, emphasized the significance of the topping out milestone and the anticipation among student-athletes, coaches, and staff for the facility's completion. The stadium represents the first collaboration between HPM and UNA, with Davis Architects, Ampere, and Fite Building Company contributing their expertise to the project.
