Joshua Cottle, a biology major at the University of Florida, has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 Friedman & Simon Academic Scholarship. The $1,500 award will support Cottle's pre-medical studies as he pursues a career in pediatric oncology, drawing inspiration from his personal experience as a cancer survivor.
In his winning essay, Cottle detailed his diagnosis with large-cell lymphoma during his freshman year of high school. His journey from patient to aspiring physician was documented through social media, where he found connection and purpose by sharing his experiences. Cottle described how positive feedback from viewers and fellow patients helped him feel less isolated during his treatment.
Family support played a crucial role in Cottle's recovery and academic perseverance. He credited his grandfather, who rose from challenging circumstances in Puerto Rico to become a doctor, as his primary inspiration. His mother's encouragement to continue his coursework despite his illness provided additional motivation during difficult times.
By December 2021, one year after his initial diagnosis, Cottle achieved full recovery and began focusing on his future goals. He expressed that inspiring hope in others facing similar challenges has become his driving purpose. Cottle currently participates in his school's Health Science Student Organization and aims to use his personal experience to support young cancer patients.
The Friedman & Simon Academic Scholarship is presented annually by Friedman & Simon Injury Lawyers L.L.P. to students whose academic achievements and life experiences reflect the firm's commitment to community support and helping those in need. The scholarship recognizes individuals who demonstrate resilience and dedication to serving others, qualities exemplified by Cottle's journey from cancer patient to aspiring medical professional.
This scholarship highlights the importance of supporting students who have overcome significant personal challenges while maintaining academic excellence. For the medical community, Cottle's story represents the valuable perspective that personal experience can bring to patient care, particularly in oncology where empathy and understanding are crucial. The award also demonstrates how legal organizations can contribute to educational opportunities beyond their primary field of practice.
