Traveling Psychiatry Exhibit at UCF Sparks Student Awareness of Mental Health Industry Abuses

The Psychiatry: An Industry of Death traveling exhibit recently hosted at the University of Central Florida Student Union has generated significant discussion among students, veterans, law enforcement, and public officials about mental health industry practices. The exhibit, which tours globally reaching tens of thousands annually, focuses on raising awareness about human rights abuses including electroshock therapy, involuntary examinations, and the medication of children with potentially dangerous psychiatric drugs.

Hosted by the Florida chapter of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights, the exhibit attracted psychology majors and other students who reported being profoundly affected by the content. One UCF psychology student stated that after touring the exhibit, her career intentions shifted dramatically, expressing shock at the practices displayed and reconsidering her path toward psychiatry. Orlando City Commissioner Antonio Tony Ortiz participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony and toured the exhibit, calling the content extremely important for public awareness. Ortiz highlighted concerns about pharmaceutical industry influence on legislation and specifically mentioned problems with Florida's Baker Act, which governs involuntary mental health examinations. He praised CCHR's parental rights booklet as a valuable community resource and expressed interest in future collaboration with the organization.

The Florida chapter maintains a permanent installation of the exhibit in downtown Clearwater, unveiled in July 2015, which presents psychiatry's history and current practices through 14 audiovisual displays. This installation has hosted over 10,000 visitors, including nursing students and technical college participants who complete the two-hour self-guided tour as part of their clinical education. The museum supplements tours with seminars and workshops conducted by attorneys and healthcare professionals focusing on mental health law and patient rights.

The exhibit's impact extends beyond student education to influencing policy discussions and professional practices. By combining historical context with contemporary issues, the display aims to educate lawmakers, medical professionals, and citizens about mental health abuses and legal protections. The Clearwater museum operates with free public admission Monday through Friday from 10:30am to 6pm and weekends from 2pm to 6pm, hosting weekly and monthly events that continue the conversation about mental health reform.
