The Italian Barrel, a beloved French Quarter fixture for 17 years, reopens its doors on October 8, 2025, following a comprehensive 9-week refresh that thoughtfully blends respect for its historic building with modern updates designed to enhance the guest experience. Located at the corner of Barracks Street across from the Jazz Museum, the restaurant has long been celebrated for authentic Northern Italian cuisine and romantic atmosphere, now preserved and expanded under the stewardship of new owners Lori and Kevin Cates.
The Cates, longtime guests who were engaged at the restaurant and also own Teddy Wong's Dumplings & Wine in Fort Worth, took stewardship in April 2025 with a commitment to preserving the establishment's legacy while elevating every aspect of the dining experience. The refresh maintains the staff guests know and love while providing extensive training to refine both service and culinary skills, ensuring continuity of the warm hospitality that has defined The Italian Barrel for nearly two decades.
Significant physical enhancements include a transformed bar area featuring custom oak shelving and LED backlighting that highlights the exposed brick wall, complemented by a greatly expanded wine collection. New stylish, comfortable chairs and barstools improve guest comfort, while floor-to-ceiling drapery frames French Quarter views while heightening intimacy. The bathrooms have been refreshed and modernized, and critical infrastructure upgrades include new kitchen equipment, air conditioning systems, grease trap, and back-of-house improvements.
The revitalized menu continues to honor Italy's regional traditions with signature dishes including Nonna Novella's Bolognese–Bologna Style, a family recipe rich with authenticity and depth; Osso Buco now offered seven days a week; Penne al Gorgonzola e Noci, a classic Ligurian dish of creamy Gorgonzola, toasted walnuts, and balsamic; and Seared Tuna Steak inspired by the Northern Italian coast, served over arugula pine-nut pesto linguini with blistered cherry tomatoes and oyster mushrooms. The wine program has been substantially expanded to feature over 30 Italian wines by the glass, with strong emphasis on Barolo, Barbaresco, and Southern Italian discoveries.
The restaurant will operate seven days a week from 11 AM to 10 PM and will remain open on both Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, offering a warm Italian setting with large tables for seasonal celebrations. Reservations are now available through https://www.opentable.com. Upcoming experiences include fall truffle specials in late October, holiday menus in November and December, and the launch of a private dining room and wine dinner series in Spring 2026 with seating for up to 36 guests.
For co-owner Kevin Cates, whose mother emigrated from near Venice, the restaurant represents both personal connection and cultural preservation. The refresh maintains the establishment's position as a neighborhood treasure while enhancing its appeal to both loyal patrons and new visitors seeking authentic Northern Italian cuisine in the heart of New Orleans.
