Collaborative Relief Effort Delivers Over 270,000 Meals to Hurricane Melissa Survivors in Jamaica

As Hurricane Melissa impacted Jamaica in October, disaster response organizations mobilized to address critical food needs for survivors. Operation BBQ Relief, a US disaster non-profit organization, recognized the urgent requirement for meals and organized volunteer teams in Florida to prepare and ship thousands of food packages to affected families facing hunger and food insecurity.

The Churches of Scientology Disaster Response (CSDR) joined the effort through its Deputy National Director Joava Good, who offered volunteer support to Operation BBQ Relief executives. CSDR Volunteer Ministers from the Clearwater, Florida area collaborated with Operation BBQ Relief volunteers, local government agencies, and school groups in a coordinated relief operation.

The massive packing operation took place in a Pinellas Park warehouse equipped with forklifts, pallet jacks, and specialized tables provided by Amazon. Volunteers dedicated hundreds of hours assembling two different box sizes containing non-perishable food sufficient to sustain a family of four for either three days (36 meals) or six days (72 meals). The operation involved complex logistics including labeling, assembling, and taping boxes; transporting food to assembly lines; packing boxes; and preparing pallets for shipment.

Doyle Mills, CSDR national executive who coordinated the Scientology volunteers, emphasized the extensive planning behind the seemingly simple operation. Mills noted that approximately 270,000 meals were successfully shipped, with some boxes transported directly to airports for loading onto small planes while larger quantities were trucked to Miami for cargo aircraft transport.

The collaboration between organizations demonstrated the effectiveness of coordinated disaster response.
