Arius Technology has announced a cultural heritage project with the Municipality of Sansepolcro, Italy, to digitize Piero della Francesca's fresco 'The Resurrection.' The project involves using Arius's proprietary ultra-high-resolution 3D scanning technology to capture the surface detail of the centuries-old artwork located in the Museo Civico 'Piero della Francesca.' This partnership marks a significant advancement in the digitization of fine art and cultural conservation.
The scanning process will employ conservation-grade technology that safely records the fresco's surface texture and color with precision down to 10 microns. This will create highly detailed digital records, known as ADMF™, intended for conservation, study, and restoration purposes. Art historians recognize 'The Resurrection' as one of the greatest works of Western art, making this digitization effort particularly important for preserving cultural heritage.
Paul Lindahl, CEO of Arius Technology, emphasized the global significance of the artwork, stating that their technology captures the full dimensionality and detail of the original to ensure its legacy endures in the digital realm. Arius's technology captures both 3D surface geometry and color, producing data-rich files that can be used for conservation analysis, museum-grade reproductions, and digital storage on blockchain platforms. This approach represents a pivotal step in preserving frescoes, which are especially vulnerable to environmental and structural degradation.
The project is part of a long-term partnership with the Comune di Sansepolcro, the hometown of Piero della Francesca. Art historian Luca Baroni noted that Sansepolcro is the first municipality in Italy to adopt this technology, highlighting the strength of local institutions in preserving cultural treasures. Fabrizio Innocenti, Mayor of Sansepolcro, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating it honors Piero della Francesca's legacy by enhancing artistic heritage through cutting-edge technology.
This initiative is part of Arius Technology's broader effort to collaborate with cultural institutions worldwide, providing tools that bridge art history, technology, and public engagement. The digitization of 'The Resurrection' aims to make the artwork more accessible and secure for future generations, supporting both preservation and educational purposes.
