Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association will host a free online workshop titled "Love Your Liver" for Black History Month on February 5 at 7 PM ET. The event is designed to address liver cancer prevention, early detection, and access to care within Black and African American communities, which experience disproportionate rates of the disease and significant barriers to treatment.
The workshop will feature Dr. Rebecca Jones, Ph.D., a Faculty Associate at the Institute for Health Promotion Research at UT Health San Antonio. Dr. Jones will lead an interactive discussion aimed at helping participants recognize symptoms, understand risk factors, and navigate healthcare systems with greater confidence. This educational initiative comes as primary liver cancer rates continue to rise steadily in the United States, with Black patients facing earlier onset, higher mortality rates, and more frequent delayed diagnoses compared to other demographic groups.
The "Love Your Liver for Black History Month" program directly confronts these health inequities by equipping attendees with practical tools to advocate for screening, implement lifestyle changes, and seek medical support before symptoms become severe. The event is open to patients, caregivers, medical professionals, and community leaders who wish to learn more about how liver cancer specifically impacts Black communities and what actionable steps individuals can take to protect themselves and their families.
Participants in the workshop will receive free educational resources and will have the opportunity to submit questions during the live session. While the event is free to attend, registration is required. Blue Faery's broader mission focuses on preventing, treating, and curing primary liver cancer through research, education, and advocacy. The organization maintains several support programs, including an online Liver Cancer Community for patients and caregivers and provides free comprehensive patient education through its Patient Resource Guides for Liver Cancer, available at https://bluefaery.org/patient-resource-guides.
Other initiatives from Blue Faery include HCC Lunch & Learn, Love Your Liver, The Truth About Liver Cancer, and You and Liver Cancer programs. The upcoming Black History Month workshop represents a targeted effort to bridge critical information gaps in a community disproportionately affected by liver cancer, potentially leading to earlier interventions and improved health outcomes. By providing accessible, expert-led education during a culturally significant month, the event aims to empower individuals with knowledge that could significantly alter personal and community health trajectories regarding a serious and growing public health concern.
