The Pole municipal de Vaudreuil-Dorion, a civic project in Quebec, has been awarded the Grand Prix d’Excellence, the top distinction in the 2026 Awards of Excellence program by the Ordre des architectes du Quebec (OAQ). The recognition celebrates the project’s exceptional integration of natural daylight, sustainability, and human-centered design, achieved in part through the use of Advanced Glazings Ltd.’s SoleraWall System® translucent glazing technology.
Designed by Lapointe Magne et associes and L’OEUF Architectes, the Vaudreuil-Dorion municipal hub serves as a landmark civic building that prioritizes occupant wellness and environmental performance. The SoleraWall System® plays a central role by diffusing and distributing natural daylight throughout the structure while minimizing glare and thermal discomfort, creating bright and visually comfortable public spaces suitable for extended daily use. The project has been widely praised for combining civic transparency with sustainability, a reflection of a broader movement in Quebec architecture toward healthier public environments.
“This project shows what becomes possible when architects are no longer forced to compromise between daylight, comfort, and energy performance,” said Dr. Doug Milburn, Chairman of Advanced Glazings. “The Vaudreuil-Dorion municipal hub creates an extraordinary public environment powered by natural light, and we’re honored that the SoleraWall System® could help support that vision.”
Unlike conventional glazing systems that often require tradeoffs between daylight, glare, heat gain, and comfort, the SoleraWall System® transforms harsh direct sunlight into soft, evenly distributed, full-spectrum natural daylight. This technology is increasingly adopted in schools, civic buildings, cultural institutions, airports, and other settings where human performance and visual comfort are critical. The system’s ability to enhance indoor environmental quality aligns with growing demands for sustainable and occupant-focused architecture.
The OAQ Awards of Excellence were presented during the organization’s Awards and Distinctions Evening held in Montreal on April 30, 2026. The Grand Prix d’Excellence is the highest overall distinction, recognizing projects that meaningfully advance the quality of the built environment across Quebec. For Advanced Glazings, the recognition underscores the impact of its daylighting technology on real-world projects. The company, based in Sydney, Nova Scotia, develops advanced daylighting technologies including the SoleraWall System® and Solera Reserve systems, which are used in commercial, institutional, and residential applications across North America.
The implications of this award extend beyond the project itself, signaling a shift in architectural priorities toward designs that enhance occupant well-being and energy efficiency. By demonstrating that high-performance daylighting can be achieved without compromising other building metrics, the Vaudreuil-Dorion hub sets a precedent for future public buildings in Quebec and beyond. For the construction and design industries, the project exemplifies how innovative glazing solutions can meet both aesthetic and functional goals, potentially influencing procurement decisions for similar civic projects. The recognition also highlights the growing importance of natural light as a design element in achieving sustainability certifications and improving user satisfaction in public spaces.
