The Avon Theatre – Deborah & Chuck Cinema Arts Center, a nonprofit independent cinema in Stamford, Connecticut, has announced the creation of the Louisa S. Greene Education Fund, a new initiative designed to expand the theater's educational mission and create opportunities for the next generation to experience film's transformative power.
Longtime Avon supporter and former Director of Development Louisa S. Greene has committed a $50,000 matching gift to launch the Fund. Donations to the Louisa S. Greene Education Fund will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $50,000, effectively doubling the impact of community support. Those interested in contributing can do so through the Louisa S. Greene Education Fund page.
The Fund will support educational opportunities for students, young filmmakers, educators, and community members to discover, study, discuss, and create films. This initiative arrives as the Avon undergoes its Avon reCreated renovation and expansion, which will transform the historic venue into the Avon Theatre – Deborah & Chuck Royce Cinema Arts Center. The newly reimagined facility is scheduled to reopen in Fall 2027 and will offer expanded opportunities for educational, cultural, and community programming.
"Louisa's extraordinary commitment to the Avon and her belief in film education have made this vision possible," said Peter H. Gistelinck, Executive Director of the Avon Theatre. "The Louisa S. Greene Education Fund will help us build on that generosity and develop meaningful educational experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for the art of film."
The establishment of the Fund underscores the Avon's commitment to education as a core component of its mission. While the theater is closed for renovation, the organization continues to fulfill its mission through Avon on Tour, which brings films, discussions, and educational programs to venues throughout Stamford and surrounding communities, including Ferguson Library, The Bruce Museum, Darien Library, Mill River Park, Stamford Town Center, and other partner locations.
This announcement matters because it signals a strategic investment in film education at a time when many arts organizations are navigating financial pressures. By securing a matching gift, the Avon not only incentivizes community giving but also ensures that educational programming will be a central pillar of its future. The Fund will help cultivate the next generation of filmmakers and film enthusiasts, fostering media literacy and creative expression. For the Stamford community and beyond, the Avon's expanded educational offerings will provide accessible cultural enrichment and learning opportunities, reinforcing the theater's role as a cultural cornerstone since 1939.
