The American Heart Association has announced that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, a leading researcher in pulmonary vascular disease, is the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, effective with the journal’s July 6 issue. Maron succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who served from 2004 to 2016.
Maron is a board-certified clinical cardiologist and distinguished researcher recognized globally for mechanistic and clinical advances in pulmonary hypertension, right heart failure, and cardiomyopathy. He serves as senior associate dean for precision medicine, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Melvin Sharovsky Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He also co-executive directs the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing in Bethesda, Maryland, and previously held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and served as a visiting professor at Imperial College London.
“Dr. Maron’s appointment as the next editor in chief of Circulation underscores the American Heart Association’s commitment to advancing transformative science shaping the future of cardiovascular medicine,” said Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Association’s Scientific Publishing Committee. “His vision, scientific breadth and dedication to robust research and innovation position Circulation for optimal success in its next chapter of influence and impact.”
Maron outlined several new features for the journal, including a “Clinician Lighthouse” article offering expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic test results and patient management, a “Clinician’s Corner” for real-world clinical decision-making, and a “Patient’s Corner” article for the public and patient community. The journal will also introduce graphic abstracts for all research articles, central illustrations for invited papers, video commentaries for select manuscripts, and expanded weekly electronic table of contents alerts with brief summaries. The manuscript submission process will be streamlined with an accelerated and more transparent review timeline.
The new editorial team includes Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, from Washington University School of Medicine, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. Ten deputy editors have been appointed for specific sections: Joseph C. Wu (Fundamental Sciences), Matthew L. Steinhauser (Translational Science, Therapeutics and Physiology), Jennifer E. Ho and Ryan J. Tedford (Clinical Cardiology), Adrian F. Hernandez and P. Gabriel Steg (Clinical Trials), Tiffany Powell-Wiley (Community Health), Mercedes Carnethon (Population Health), Ana Mocumbi (Global Cardiovascular Health), and Thomas M. Maddox (AI for Process and Science).
“I am deeply honored to take on the remarkable role of leading Circulation,” said Maron. “I am energized to forge a new path for the journal that strengthens and expands on the legacy and success of the editors before me. Our mission is to reinvigorate the type of cardiovascular science and medicine published in Circulation, and fast track that information to our readers with additional transparency.”
Maron earned his bachelor’s degree from Williams College and his medical degree from Brown University School of Medicine, with internal medicine training at Boston Medical Center and cardiovascular fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He has co-authored more than 260 scientific publications and holds six patents. His research has focused on molecular mechanisms of vascular fibrosis, clinical risk in pulmonary hypertension, and use of artificial intelligence to automate clinical diagnosis.
Circulation is the flagship journal of the American Heart Association’s portfolio of 14 peer-reviewed scientific journals, each editorially independent. The Association receives more than 85% of its revenue from non-corporate sources, and its financial information is available here.
