Colorado Rural Health Center Honors Rio Grande Hospital and Clinics During Safety Net Clinic Week

The Colorado Rural Health Center (CRHC) marked the state's annual Safety Net Clinic Week (August 23-29, 2026) with a special celebration in Del Norte, Colorado, honoring Rio Grande Hospital and Clinics. The event included a staff luncheon and a video screening focused on the role of primary care preceptors in sustaining the rural healthcare workforce.

Safety net clinics are essential providers for rural residents, particularly those who are uninsured, underinsured, or covered by public programs such as Medicaid and Medicare. CRHC CEO Michelle Mills emphasized their importance: "Safety net clinics are the go-to facilities for rural residents and visitors in need of high-quality healthcare. They serve those who are uninsured, underinsured, or insured through public programs and are vibrant parts of local communities and economies." She added that the annual Safety Net Clinic Week aims to educate policymakers and community leaders about the need to keep these clinics thriving.

Despite facing challenges such as limited funding, workforce shortages, and increasing regulatory demands, safety net clinics continue to provide vital care. They operate under various models, including Rural Health Clinics (RHCs), and are committed to serving vulnerable populations. This year's event highlighted Rio Grande Hospital and Clinics, which recently earned recognition as a Top 10 Hospital and Top 10 Clinic for Overall Performance, as well as their dedication to training future rural primary care physicians.

Governor Jared Polis issued a proclamation declaring August 23-29, 2026 as Safety Net Clinic Week in Colorado, stating that "rural safety net clinics provide essential healthcare treatment and preventive services to vulnerable populations in communities throughout our state… We express our appreciation and gratitude to rural safety net clinics who designate their time, energy, and resources to serving their communities."

The Colorado Rural Health Center, established in 1991, serves as the State Office of Rural Health and a nonprofit advocate for rural healthcare policy. The event in Del Norte underscored the critical role these clinics play in ensuring access to care in rural areas, and the importance of supporting them through policy and community engagement. As healthcare continues to evolve, safety net clinics remain a cornerstone of rural health, and events like this help shine a light on their indispensable contributions.
