The Estate of Leonard Bermudez, a California painter and sculptor who passed away in 2010, is opening his artistic legacy to a new generation. His son, Edward Bermudez, is spearheading an initiative to preserve, document, and present his father's body of work, which spans over three decades and includes paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media pieces. The first public presentation will take place on Thursday, September 3, 2026, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at The Braly at The Continental in Downtown Los Angeles as part of DTLA ArtNight.
Leonard Bermudez (1943–2010) was born in Sacramento and raised partly in Pacoima. He led a dual life as both an artist and an aerospace professional. After starting his career fabricating aircraft components, he joined Lockheed and eventually worked in its Skunk Works division as a tool designer on groundbreaking programs such as the SR-71 Blackbird and F-117 Stealth Fighter. Despite his demanding engineering career, Bermudez pursued art relentlessly, often working late into the night in his studio.
His artistic practice was self-taught and spanned oil painting, pencil, chalk, pastels, metal sculpture, metal etching, and photography. His influences ranged from Salvador Dalí and Diego Rivera to Monet, Picasso, and Jackson Pollock. His work explored geometric abstraction, Cubism, Modernism, and Abstract Expressionism. Central to his art was a fascination with organic forms, polished metal, light, reflection, and distortion. In his artist statement, Bermudez explained that he drew inspiration from nature's organic forms and recreated them in chrome and polished metal. The reflective surfaces became an active element of the artwork, changing with the viewer's position and perspective. He often used his sculptures as subjects for his paintings, translating their forms and reflections into abstract compositions, a visual world he called "Metallic Reflections."
Bermudez's exhibition history, though not widely known, reveals an active Southern California presence. His documented exhibitions include Lockheed Employee Art Shows from 1968 to 1972, the San Fernando Valley Art Council's Symphony in Color, and shows in Beverly Hills, Palm Springs, Lake Arrowhead, and Sherman Oaks. By the 1990s, he had solo exhibitions such as "Illusions of Solidarity" (1995) and "Metallic Reflections" and "Pick-N-Up the Pieces" (both 1996) at Artspace in Woodland Hills. He also completed public art projects, including the Unity Mural at Panorama Mall (1997) and the Freedom Mural at Pacoima Elementary (1999). He participated in cultural events like Día de los Muertos festivals, Watts World Festival, and the César Chávez Commemoration.
The Estate's mission is not centered on selling the collection but on preserving and advancing Bermudez's legacy. The opening of the Estate marks the beginning of a broader introduction to galleries, museums, curators, cultural institutions, art historians, dealers, advisors, and collectors. The Estate is welcoming conversations to help place his contributions within a broader artistic and cultural context. While select works may eventually be available for acquisition or placement, the primary goal is to ensure his work is seen, understood, and carried forward.
The September 3rd event at The Braly at The Continental will be part of DTLA ArtNight, Downtown Los Angeles' largest recurring monthly cultural event, which takes place on the first Thursday of each month. DTLA ArtNight brings together more than 50 galleries, museums, artist studios, and cultural venues, offering an accessible way for Angelenos and visitors to experience Downtown's creative community. The event is produced in partnership with Happening in DTLA, which extends the event's reach through marketing and cultural programming. This presentation offers a unique opportunity for the public to encounter Bermudez's work and story as his estate begins a new chapter.
