Flexible Circuit Technologies Inc. (FCT), a Minnesota-based flexible circuit and advanced electronics manufacturer, has announced the development of its Liquid Leak Detection Flex Assembly. The custom-engineered sensing solution is designed for liquid-cooled AI servers, high-performance computing (HPC) systems, cold plates, manifolds, quick disconnects, coolant distribution units (CDUs), and other mission-critical electronics.
As AI and HPC platforms increasingly adopt direct-to-chip liquid cooling to manage higher power densities, the risk of coolant leaks becomes more pronounced. Early detection is critical to prevent damage to expensive hardware and minimize downtime. FCT's flexible sensing assembly is engineered to conform to the geometry of cooling systems, enabling leak detection close to potential failure points while maintaining a thin, lightweight profile in space-constrained server and rack environments.
The assembly can be customized for various applications, including sensing patterns, circuit geometry, connector interfaces, and multiple detection zones. Potential monitoring locations encompass supply and return quick disconnects, GPU and CPU cold plates, manifolds, coolant lines, CDUs, and server trays. This flex-based architecture allows OEMs and cooling-system manufacturers to integrate leak sensing directly into their equipment, rather than relying solely on facility-level leak detection.
"The rapid growth of liquid-cooled AI infrastructure is creating a new need for thin, compact, highly customized leak-detection solutions," said Ray Cottrell, EVP of Flexible Circuit Technologies. "FCT's strength is designing flexible circuits around the customer's mechanical and electrical requirements. This concept allows us to bring that capability directly to cold plates, manifolds, quick disconnects, and server-level cooling assemblies where early detection can help protect high-value electronics."
FCT plans to collaborate with server OEMs and ODMs, liquid-cooling companies, cold-plate manufacturers, thermal-management suppliers, and data-center infrastructure providers to tailor the assembly to specific cooling architectures. The company's engineering team can support concept development, rapid prototyping, design-for-manufacturing, flex circuit fabrication, assembly, and scalable production. This development matters because the shift to liquid cooling in AI and HPC is accelerating, driven by the need to dissipate heat from powerful processors. Leaks in these systems can cause catastrophic damage, leading to costly repairs and operational disruptions. By providing a customizable, thin, and lightweight leak detection solution that integrates directly into cooling components, FCT aims to enhance reliability and protect high-value electronics. The ability to detect leaks early at the source could reduce maintenance costs and improve uptime for data centers, a critical factor as AI workloads become more prevalent. Furthermore, FCT's collaborative approach with industry partners ensures that the solution can be adapted to various cooling architectures, potentially setting a new standard for leak detection in mission-critical environments. With over 25 years of experience, FCT and its inTFlex division offer a range of specialty interconnects and manufacturing services, positioning them as a key enabler of next-generation cooling technologies.
