Garuda Indonesia is set to modernise its baggage system with the introduction of a piece-based checked baggage policy, known as the Piece Concept, effective for tickets issued on or after 1 September 2026. The new policy replaces the existing Weight Concept, offering passengers greater clarity and increased allowances, with maximum total baggage of up to 64 kilograms depending on route, travel class, and fare category.
Under the Piece Concept, checked baggage allowances will be determined by the number of pieces and the maximum permitted weight per piece, rather than the combined weight of all baggage. This change aims to provide passengers with more predictable and transparent baggage planning. The policy applies to tickets issued from 1 September 2026 for travel commencing on or after that date; tickets issued before this date will retain the original allowance even for travel after implementation.
Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills stated, 'The implementation of the Piece Concept forms part of Garuda Indonesia’s broader transformation to modernise our services and provide passengers with greater certainty.' He emphasised that clearer limits on baggage pieces and weight will allow passengers to plan and prepare more easily from the initial stages of their journey through to departure.
For domestic routes, Economy Class passengers will receive one checked piece weighing up to 23 kilograms, an increase from the previous 20-kilogram limit. Business Class and First Class passengers will receive two pieces weighing up to 32 kilograms each, totalling up to 64 kilograms, up from 30 kilograms and 40 kilograms respectively under the old policy. On international routes, Economy Class passengers will receive two pieces of up to 23 kilograms each (46 kg total), up from 30 kilograms. Business Class and First Class allowances increase to two pieces of up to 32 kilograms each (64 kg total), compared to 40 kilograms and 50 kilograms previously. Some passengers may receive up to 34 kilograms of additional checked baggage allowance under the new policy.
The Piece Concept is widely adopted across the global aviation industry, and its implementation at Garuda Indonesia is expected to strengthen service standardisation and support more efficient baggage handling. Mills noted that the change provides passengers with greater certainty, including when connecting to international flight networks. The airline encourages passengers to familiarise themselves with the new rules on its official website at https://www.garuda-indonesia.com/id/en/new-baggage-policy.
The policy will be reviewed and refined based on passenger feedback, reflecting Garuda Indonesia’s commitment to delivering a more convenient and comfortable travel experience while upholding safety and regulatory compliance. The airline plans to communicate the changes through its official channels, including the Contact Centre and social media accounts.
