As the Democratic Republic of the Congo grapples with the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, GeoVax Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOVX) has underscored its preparedness to contribute its vaccine development expertise and candidates to the global health response. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), has already resulted in over 4,300 cases and more than 2,000 deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), with transmission continuing across challenging and conflict-affected areas. There is currently no approved vaccine specifically targeting Bundibugyo virus, highlighting a critical gap in the public health arsenal.

GeoVax, a biotechnology company focused on infectious diseases and oncology, has developed a portfolio of vaccine candidates against high-consequence hemorrhagic fever viruses using its Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) platform. These candidates, targeting Zaire ebolavirus, Sudan ebolavirus, and Marburg virus, have shown encouraging protective efficacy in non-human primate lethal-challenge studies. The company's expertise positions it as a potential partner in the international effort to curb the outbreak.

GeoVax's lead infectious disease priority remains GEO-MVA, its MVA-based vaccine candidate for the prevention of mpox and smallpox. The company is preparing to initiate a pivotal clinical development program based on an immunobridging accelerated regulatory pathway. Portions of this program are expected to be conducted in African regions facing significant infectious disease challenges, including areas affected by the current Ebola outbreak. These planned clinical activities have already led to engagements with healthcare, research, and public health organizations in the region, many of which are simultaneously responding to the Ebola crisis.

"Our relationships in the region are being developed first and foremost to advance GEO-MVA, but many of the organizations with whom we are engaging are simultaneously confronting this Ebola outbreak," Dodd noted. "Given our experience, we believe it is appropriate to ask how we might help. Any such effort would be pursued collaboratively while maintaining our operational and capital focus on GEO-MVA."

Beyond its mpox/smallpox program, GeoVax retains a portfolio of MVA-based hemorrhagic fever vaccine candidates that have demonstrated protective efficacy in animal models, including non-human primates. These programs represent strategic optionality, and the company is open to discussing collaborations, licensing arrangements, public-private partnerships, and other structures that could provide resources for further development without diverting primary resources from GEO-MVA.

The company's broader MVA platform, combined with ongoing efforts to advance scalable manufacturing processes, positions it to address emerging infectious disease threats. GeoVax is exploring innovations such as a continuous cell-line manufacturing process to improve scalability and cost-efficiency, as well as potential single-dose regimens and microarray patch delivery technology. These initiatives align with the company's strategy to establish an independent and scalable source of MVA vaccine supply while contributing to global health preparedness.

As the Ebola outbreak continues to evolve, the need for diverse vaccine platforms and collaborative approaches becomes increasingly apparent.
