GRE Alpha Electronics has introduced the GCPD040-RF, an ultra-compact 40W constant current LED driver that can be programmed wirelessly and measures just 78 x 40 x 29 mm (3.1 x 1.6 x 1.1 in), giving it a footprint smaller than a standard business card. The driver is designed for space-constrained fixtures where designers still require smooth, flicker-free dimming, according to the company’s announcement.
The GCPD040-RF can be configured in two ways, neither of which requires a cable or power to the driver. RFID with PC software allows a single driver or a batch of drivers to be programmed at once on an RFID programming pad, speeding up configuration on the production line. NFC with a mobile app lets installers configure drivers in the field from a phone, with password-protected write access to prevent unauthorized changes. Through either method, manufacturers and installers can set output current anywhere from 200 to 1400mA, along with minimum dim level, dimming curve and other parameters, meaning one stocked driver can serve many fixture designs.
For commercial spaces, the driver supports 0-10V or 1-10V dimming and offers wirelessly programmable minimum dimming presets (1%, 10%, or Dim-To-Off) and dimming types (Logarithmic or Linear). It is flicker-free and compliant with IEEE 1789 when tested from 50% to 100% of maximum current. The driver accepts a universal 120-277V AC input and delivers up to 40W of constant current output with a 20-43V DC output range. It reaches up to 87% efficiency, draws less than 0.5W on standby and is IP64 compliant. An NTC input for an external temperature sensor and multiple built-in protection features are also included.
The GCPD040-RF is UL Listed (Class P, Class 2), meets UL 8750 and CSA C22.2, and is RoHS compliant. It also meets EU Ecodesign Regulation 2019/2020 and carries a 5-year warranty. Target applications include downlights (recessed and adjustable), track lighting (accent and display), wall-mount sconces, wall-wash uplights, decorative and architectural pendants, and exterior wall-wash and facade lighting.
The launch matters for lighting specifiers and fixture manufacturers because it addresses a persistent tension in architectural lighting: shrinking fixture sizes versus the demand for precise, flicker-free control. By making one driver programmable across a wide current range and multiple dimming profiles, GRE Alpha reduces the number of SKUs manufacturers must stock, which can lower inventory costs and simplify production. The wireless programming methods—RFID for batch production and NFC for field adjustments—could also cut installation time and reduce errors, since settings can be changed without physical access to the driver. For building owners, flicker-free operation compliant with IEEE 1789 may support occupant comfort and visual performance in commercial environments.
GRE Alpha Electronics, founded in 1989 and headquartered in Hong Kong, manufactures and distributes LED power supplies, dimming modules and lighting control accessories. The company maintains offices and distribution centers throughout North America.
