The 2026 Carlsbad Mayor's Energy Summit will feature a keynote address from Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram II, organizers have announced. The event is scheduled for Oct. 22, 2026, at the Walter Gerrells Performing Arts Center in Carlsbad, N.M. This year's theme, "From the Basin to the Nation: Local Energy, National Impact," underscores the region's significance in the national energy landscape.

Ingram, currently an on-air personality for Fox Sports, will serve as the summit's lunch presenter. He rose to national prominence as a running back for the University of Alabama, becoming the first Alabama player to win the Heisman Trophy in 2009. He later played in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens, and Houston Texans. His participation brings a high-profile sports perspective to an event traditionally focused on energy policy and industry trends.

Hosted by Carlsbad Mayor Richard Lopez and other community leaders, the summit is now in its 14th year. "It all starts here," Lopez said. "When it comes to the energy industry, what happens in the Permian Basin resonates across the entire nation." The event aims to bring together industry, community, and innovation to understand and support the area's energy impact.

Additional speakers include Matt Warren, Oil and Gas Program Lead for the Bureau of Land Management, who will address federal energy policy. Former State Cabinet Secretary Tom Clifford will discuss the financial impact of the energy industry on the state. Experts will also cover water challenges and the unique contributions the energy industry has made to the nation.

Chevron is the title sponsor, with ExxonMobil as presenting sponsor and Permian Resources as Diamond sponsor. A host of other sponsors makes the annual educational event possible, with the Carlsbad Community Foundation serving as fiscal sponsor. Thanks to this support, the summit is free to attend, though registration is requested.

Lunch will be served, and area nonprofits and businesses will have booths in the atrium. For more information and to register, visit www.carlsbadenergysummit.com.

The summit's implications extend beyond southeastern New Mexico. As the Permian Basin remains a cornerstone of U.S. energy production, discussions at this event could influence policies and practices that affect national energy security and economic stability. The inclusion of a sports celebrity like Ingram may also broaden the summit's appeal, drawing attention to the critical role of energy in everyday life. With federal and state experts on the agenda, attendees can expect insights into regulatory and financial trends that shape the industry. For local businesses and nonprofits, the networking opportunities could foster collaborations that strengthen the community. Ultimately, the Carlsbad Mayor's Energy Summit serves as a platform for dialogue and education, reinforcing the connection between local energy activities and their national consequences.
