Inventor Adrian Pelkus Chronicles Career and Advocacy in New Memoir 'Adrian, An American Artificer'

Adrian Pelkus, an American inventor and entrepreneur with 19 U.S. patents, has released his memoir, "Adrian, An American Artificer: From Ideas to Products and the Fight for Inventors' Rights." The book traces his career from early influences to his advocacy for inventors' rights, offering insight into the challenges facing independent inventors in today's patent landscape.

The memoir begins with Pelkus's childhood, shaped by his family's immigrant history, including his Greek grandmother's knowledge of herbal medicine and his father's Irish and Austrian ancestry. Growing up in Southern California, he was introduced to prosthetics work through UCLA's Child Amputee Prosthetics Project, an early exposure that would inform his later work in medical technology.

Pelkus's career spans multiple companies and technical fields, including positions at Delta Design, Oak Systems, Electron Beam Corporation, and Astro Guard Industries. He also founded A Squared Technologies, a San Diego-based electronics manufacturing and product development company that operated for four decades, and later ventures such as IYIA Technologies and SteriSys. Throughout his career, he developed a wide range of inventions covering medical devices, consumer products, industrial systems, and biomedical technologies.

A central theme of the book is the legal and policy environment affecting inventors in the United States. Pelkus examines the America Invents Act and the Supreme Court's 2006 decision in eBay v. MercExchange, which he argues weakened patent holders' ability to secure injunctive relief against infringement. This shift, he contends, has made it harder for independent inventors to protect their intellectual property against larger corporations.

The book also highlights Pelkus's involvement with inventor advocacy organizations, including the San Diego Inventors Forum, the United Inventors Association, and the South Carolina Inventors Forum. These groups play a crucial role in supporting independent inventors through education, networking, and legislative advocacy.

Pelkus is particularly known for developing Vaporous Hyperoxia Therapy (VHT), a patented and trademarked wound-healing technology that has been studied in clinical research. His work in this area exemplifies his commitment to creating practical solutions that improve lives.

The memoir concludes with a reflection on the state of independent inventing in the United States, referencing Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 of the U.S. Constitution, which grants Congress the power to promote the progress of science and useful arts by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries. Pelkus argues that this constitutional protection is essential to fostering innovation and that recent legal changes have undermined its original intent.

The memoir includes contributions from others in the intellectual property field, such as an article from Michele Nash-Hoff, and acknowledges the editorial contributions of IP attorney David Waller. "Adrian, An American Artificer" is available now through New York Publishing Labs, with more information available at https://inventingwithadrian.com/about.
