Optimal Pool Care Warns of Heat-Damaged Pools After Arizona's Record Summer

Following Arizona's hottest summer on record, Scottsdale-based Optimal Pool Care has issued a warning to homeowners about heat-damaged pools. The company reports a rise in repair and cleanup requests since August, primarily due to failed pumps, algae-filled pools, and scaled or cracked surfaces. The extreme heat took a toll on pool equipment and surfaces, and many homeowners are now discovering the consequences.

Phoenix recorded 100 degrees as early as March 18, the earliest such reading in 20 years, and set a daily record of 114 degrees on August 25. Statewide, the summer averaged 2.7 degrees above normal temperatures. "Most homeowners think of a pool as something that sits there all summer. In reality, the pump, filter and water chemistry were working overtime for six straight months. By October, a lot of that equipment is worn out, and the damage usually doesn't show until something fails," said Santos Castro, owner of Optimal Pool Care.

Optimal Pool Care technicians report that this summer's damage generally falls into three categories. Overworked equipment, such as pumps operating longer hours to keep hot water circulating, leads to overheating motors, worn bearings, and failed seals. Algae and unbalanced water result from sun and heat depleting chlorine faster than homeowners replenish it. Surface and tile damage occurs from constant evaporation depositing calcium from the Valley's hard water, building scale on tile and plaster, while extreme temperature fluctuations crack coping and loosen tile.

Homeowners should look for five warning signs this fall. A pump that sounds different, with grinding, loud humming, or tripping breakers, typically indicates a worn motor or bearings. Water that won't stay clear, turning cloudy or green days after treatment, points to a filter or circulation problem. A white crust at the waterline signals calcium scale, which is easier and less costly to remove before it hardens. Rough, stained, or flaking plaster may require an acid wash or resurfacing. Cracked coping or loose tile allows water behind the tile and can develop into more extensive repairs.

Fall is the time to address these issues. Optimal Pool Care advises homeowners to have their pump, filter, water chemistry, and surfaces inspected this fall, before minor heat damage becomes a significant repair heading into next summer. The company provides weekly pool cleaning and full repair service across Scottsdale, Phoenix, Paradise Valley, Fountain Hills, Cave Creek, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, and Chandler, with written pricing provided upfront before any work begins.

"Weekly service is the best protection against a summer like this one. When someone checks your chemistry, cleans your filter and listens to your pump every week, small problems get fixed before they turn into a $1,000-plus pump replacement," Castro said.

Homeowners can schedule pool cleaning or repair service by visiting optimalpoolcare.com. Optimal Pool Care is a Scottsdale-based pool service company with more than 15 years of experience serving Arizona homeowners. Its technicians are Certified Pool & Spa Operators (CPO) and members of the Independent Pool & Spa Service Association (IPSSA). The company serves the Greater Phoenix area from its office at 901 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85257.

This news matters because record heat is becoming more common, and pool owners may face costly repairs if they don't act. By recognizing the warning signs and scheduling inspections, homeowners can avoid major expenses and keep their pools safe and functional. The increased demand for repair services also highlights the broader impact of climate extremes on home maintenance and local businesses.
