The Italian Barrel, an intimate Northern Italian restaurant located at 1240 Decatur Street in New Orleans' French Quarter, has been honored with the 2026 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. This recognition is part of Wine Spectator's annual Restaurant Awards, which celebrate the world's best restaurants for wine. The Italian Barrel is among 4,012 restaurants worldwide that received an award this year.
The Award of Excellence is given to restaurants whose wine lists offer at least 75 selections and feature a well-chosen assortment of quality producers, with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style. This year, 2,083 restaurants earned this level of recognition. The Italian Barrel's wine program, which emphasizes Northern Italian wines, has been praised for its depth and integration into the dining experience.
Lori and Kevin Cates, co-owners of The Italian Barrel, expressed their gratitude for the award. "Wine is part of the natural rhythm of a meal at The Italian Barrel—not an afterthought, but something to explore slowly, share generously and enjoy course by course," they said. "This recognition belongs to our entire team, whose knowledge, care and hospitality make every bottle and every table feel personal."
The restaurant was founded by Verona-born Chef Samantha Castagnetti and is now stewarded by the Cates, who were longtime guests before becoming owners. The Italian Barrel honors the traditions of Northern Italy through seasonal pastas, composed secondi, carefully sourced ingredients and a deeply Italian wine program. The venue offers indoor and heated outdoor seating, inviting guests to slow down and share courses.
Wine Spectator Chairman and CEO Marvin R. Shanken noted the evolving restaurant industry, stating, "The restaurant industry is rapidly transforming as diners become more selective about when, how and what they drink. As wine drinkers grow more mindful, restaurants are adapting with creative wine programs." He congratulated all award winners for elevating the wine experience for guests around the world.
Wine Spectator's special Restaurant Awards issue will be available on newsstands July 21, 2026. More information about winners, including interviews with leading wine directors and wine picks from sommeliers, can be found at WineSpectator.com/Restaurants. Winners can also be searched by name, location, award level, cuisine, wine specialties and pricing in the Restaurant Search feature.
For The Italian Barrel, this award underscores its dedication to providing a comprehensive wine experience that complements its Northern Italian cuisine. The recognition may influence other restaurants in the region to enhance their wine programs, as the industry adapts to changing diner preferences. For wine enthusiasts, the award signals a destination where wine is thoughtfully curated and integrated into the meal.
