The Marine Toys for Tots Literacy Program has announced a nationwide initiative called Operation Turn the Page, designed to address the educational challenges faced by children in low-income communities as they head back to school. The program, which has distributed more than 63 million books and educational resources since 2008, is focusing on bridging the summer learning gap by providing books to children who might otherwise lack access to reading materials.
The initiative underscores a stark disparity: in low-income communities, there may be only one age-appropriate book available for every 300 children. This scarcity can hinder literacy development and academic achievement, making the transition back to school particularly difficult for students who have not engaged in reading over the summer. Operation Turn the Page aims to mitigate this by ensuring that children have books during the summer months, helping them return to the classroom ready to learn.
“A single book may seem like a small gift, but for a child impacted by summer learning loss, it can open the door to possibilities they never knew existed,” said Lieutenant General Jim Laster, U.S. Marines (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “When children living in low-income communities have access to books throughout the summer, they return to school more confident, engaged, and prepared to learn. When you give a book, you unlock a future.”
The impact of the program is already visible in schools across the country. At a Freedom Trail Elementary, a teacher noted, “For many of our students, receiving these books means more than just reading—it’s the beginning of their first home library and a lifelong love of learning.” Similarly, at United Elementary, more than 400 books were distributed, and staff observed “excitement, pride, and a growing love of reading both in school and at home.” At Entheos Academy, a teacher recalled, “One student’s face lit up with pure wonder when she found a book about baseball—proof that the right book can spark a lifelong love of reading.”
The importance of this initiative extends beyond individual success stories. Literacy is a cornerstone of academic achievement and lifelong opportunity. By providing books to underserved children, Operation Turn the Page helps level the playing field, giving all students a fair chance to succeed. The program also addresses the broader issue of summer learning loss, which disproportionately affects children from low-income households. When children return to school without having practiced reading, they may fall behind their peers, a gap that can widen over time.
Supporters of the program are encouraged to contribute, as every donation helps provide books and educational resources to children in need. “When you give a book, you unlock a future,” Laster emphasized. The initiative is part of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation’s broader mission to support children and families in need, and it relies on public generosity to continue its work.
For those interested in supporting Operation Turn the Page, more information and donation options are available at the Toys for Tots website. The program demonstrates that a simple act of giving a book can have a profound impact on a child's educational journey, helping them turn the page toward a brighter future.
