TRATON GROUP reported a 10% year-over-year increase in third-quarter 2026 unit sales, reaching 78,900 vehicles, according to preliminary figures. The gain was primarily driven by significantly stronger customer demand in the United States, marking an acceleration from the 4% growth recorded in the second quarter and a slow start to the year. For the first nine months of 2026, cumulative unit sales totaled 230,400 vehicles, up 3% from the prior-year period.
International Motors, the group's US-focused brand, posted a 48% jump in third-quarter unit sales to 19,900 vehicles, more than offsetting declines from the first half of the year. The US market has recently seen a strong recovery in customer demand. For the first nine months, International's unit sales were 3% above the prior-year level. This performance underscores the importance of the North American market to TRATON's overall growth trajectory.
Scania Vehicles & Services increased third-quarter unit sales by 3% to 22,100 vehicles, supported by the ramp-up of production at its new plant in Rugao, China, and the government-supported "Move Brasil" loan program in Brazil. For the first nine months, Scania's unit sales rose 1% to 69,300 vehicles. MAN Truck & Bus recorded a slight 1% decrease in the third quarter to 24,500 vehicles, as positive truck business was offset by declines in bus and van segments; however, for the first nine months, MAN's unit sales were 5% higher at 75,400 vehicles. Volkswagen Truck & Bus saw a 5% third-quarter increase to 12,500 vehicles, also aided by the Brazilian loan program, though its nine-month total fell 1% to 36,300 vehicles due to a weak first quarter.
Electrification results were mixed. Total all-electric vehicle sales fell 6% in the third quarter to 770 units but rose 29% over nine months to 2,670 units. Scania's electric sales jumped 55% in the quarter and 69% over nine months, while MAN's electric sales climbed 32% and 36%, respectively. International's electric sales dropped 72% in the quarter and 8% over nine months, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus electric sales surged 375% in the quarter but were flat over nine months. These figures highlight both progress and unevenness in the industry's shift to zero-emission fleets.
The strong US performance is a critical signal for the commercial vehicle sector, suggesting that freight demand and fleet replacement cycles are recovering after a prolonged downturn. For investors and industry stakeholders, TRATON's acceleration could indicate broader economic resilience in North America and improving conditions in key emerging markets like Brazil and China. The company will publish its 9M 2026 Interim Statement on October 28, 2026, available at https://ir.traton.com/en/publications, providing further detail on the group's financial and operational performance.
