Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) has completed a strategic equity investment by the U.S. Department of War totaling approximately US$35.6 million, the company announced. The investment was made across transactions with Trilogy and South32 Limited, its joint venture partner.
According to the announcement, Trilogy and South32 have committed the full proceeds to Ambler Metals LLC, their 50/50 joint venture, to advance exploration and development of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) in northwestern Alaska. The UKMP includes the high-grade Arctic polymetallic deposit and the Bornite copper-cobalt deposit.
The U.S. Department of War also committed to work in good faith to help facilitate financing for construction of the proposed 211-mile Ambler Road, in coordination with the State of Alaska and the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority.
This investment represents a significant endorsement of the UKMP by the U.S. government, which could accelerate the development of one of the world’s richest copper-dominant districts. The Ambler Mining District hosts polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits with high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization. These minerals are critical for renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles, and national security applications.
Trilogy Metals holds a 50 percent interest in Ambler Metals LLC, which has a 100 percent interest in the UKMP. South32, a globally diversified mining and metals company, exercised its option to form the joint venture on December 19, 2019. The UKMP spans approximately 190,929 hectares and includes two primary deposits: the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit.
Ambler Metals has an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., an Alaska Native Corporation, that provides a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities. Trilogy Metals’ vision is to develop the Ambler Mining District into a premier North American copper producer while protecting and respecting subsistence livelihoods.
The completion of this investment follows the previously announced agreement and underscores the strategic importance of domestic critical mineral production. For investors, the injection of government funds reduces financial risk and signals strong support for the project’s advancement. The commitment to facilitate financing for the Ambler Road is particularly crucial, as the road would provide essential access to the remote mining district, enabling the transportation of materials and supplies.
For the mining industry, this move highlights a growing trend of government involvement in securing supply chains for critical minerals. The UKMP’s copper and cobalt resources are vital for the transition to a low-carbon economy, and this investment could stimulate further development in the region, creating jobs and economic opportunities for Alaska.
