Utopai Studios, founded in August 2025, has become the world's largest independent AI-native film and television studio, according to Variety, with a valuation of $1 billion as estimated by Forbes. The company now has 25 original projects in various stages of development and production, with three feature films and two series scheduled for 2027. This rapid growth signals a shift in how generative AI is being applied in entertainment, moving beyond short-form experiments to full-scale film and television production.
Unlike many early AI entertainment ventures that focused on individual clips or technical demonstrations, Utopai Studios has built infrastructure for developing, financing, producing, and distributing long-form content. The studio integrates AI into its production pipeline from the beginning, but creative decisions remain with filmmakers and artists. CEO and co-founder Cecilia Shen and co-founder and CTO Jie Yang lead the company, which combines creative talent, production expertise, and global distribution with its proprietary PAI system. PAI supports visual development, scene planning, continuity, video generation, editing, and localization, working alongside traditional filmmaking tools rather than replacing them.
The studio has formed partnerships with established entertainment companies in Asia, including Huace Film & TV Co., Ltd. in China and DeNA Co., Ltd. in Japan. More than 18 original projects are in development in Asia. In April, Utopai announced a partnership with Huace, which owns one of the world's largest television IP libraries, to support long-form storytelling and global localization, including the animated series Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years.
The 2027 slate includes three feature films—Half Moon, Cortés, and The Most Serious Fart—and two series, Space Nation and Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years. These projects demonstrate that AI-native production can accommodate multiple creative approaches. Half Moon, written and directed by Hyo-joo Yang and presented by Utopai Studios, Germany's In Good Company, and Korea's Paper Barn Studios, began principal photography in Germany in August 2026. PAI supports select visual elements while the film remains grounded in live-action performances. The story follows Yeri, a neglected young girl, and her aunt Ah-Jin as they reconnect during a summer on a remote North Sea island.
Cortés, a historical epic set in 1519 during the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, is a Marco Weber Production for Utopai Studios. Written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nicholas Kazan and directed by Paul Mignot, it is a Paris-based production with shooting planned for September in Spain and a wide theatrical release in 2027. AI-enabled tools will help overcome scale and cost limitations that previously kept the project from being made.
The Most Serious Fart, based on the 2023 children's book by Mike Bender and illustrator Chuck Dillon, is an animated feature scheduled for wide theatrical release in 2027. Bender will write and direct, with Russell Hollander producing. The story follows Siegfried, a serious fart seeking belonging, and uses AI as part of a human-led creative process.
Space Nation, an eight-episode sci-fi series produced by Ex Machina Studios, is one of the first AI productions picked up by a traditional buyer, including Brazil's Globoplay. Set in the near future, it follows elite pilots defending Earth. Marco Weber and Martin Weisz co-created the series, with Weisz directing all eight episodes. Principal production is underway in alignment with Hollywood guilds, and K5 International handles worldwide distribution.
Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years, developed with Huace, takes a more fully AI-generated approach to animation. Inspired by the classic Chinese novel, it reimagines the untold history of Sun Wukong. Utopai Studios controls rights outside China, with potential for a theatrical version.
The studio has also extended its reach through sports and creator partnerships. Basketball star Carmelo Anthony invested through Creative 7 Productions and became a strategic partner, while James Harden collaborated on an animated short inspired by his beard. These relationships connect Utopai's technology with intellectual property and new production opportunities.
The 2027 slate will be a critical test for Utopai Studios' model. As the conversation around generative AI shifts from potential to finished products, the company is betting that human-led, AI-native production can deliver ambitious entertainment that stands on its own.
