Record-low water levels on the Danube River, with the Rhine also approaching historic lows, are causing significant disruptions for Viking River Cruises. Travelers with upcoming departures are urged to remain flexible and avoid making costly decisions based solely on news reports, according to Heather Viking, Director of the Viking Division at Club Cruise™.
"The biggest Viking mistake right now would be canceling a cruise before knowing what Viking plans to do with your specific departure," Heather said. "River conditions can vary dramatically by location, and they can change quickly." The Associated Press reported July 30 that extended drought and extreme heat had pushed portions of the Danube to record-low levels, while the Rhine was nearing record lows in Germany, with navigation continuing under restrictions in some areas.
Heather recommends travelers departing within the next several weeks take specific steps. First, do not cancel based only on the news, as voluntary cancellations may incur penalties. Instead, wait for Viking's operating plan for the specific sailing. Second, monitor the reservation through email, voicemail, and My Viking Journey, paying attention to changes in embarkation or disembarkation locations, revised meeting points, airport transfers, ports, excursions, ship substitutions, and luggage instructions.
Third, contact the travel advisor who holds the booking. For those booked through Club Cruise, Heather's team can assist. Travelers who booked directly should contact Viking and retain copies of all communications. "Do not rely on social media speculation when the answer may be sitting inside your actual reservation," Heather said. Fourth, keep essentials like passports, medication, and a change of clothing in a carry-on, especially if a ship swap or land transfer occurs. Fifth, review independent travel arrangements, as a changed embarkation point can affect hotels, flights, and other bookings.
When a Viking ship cannot pass due to low water, operational changes may include a revised docking location with motorcoach transportation, a modified itinerary, excursions operated by motorcoach, a temporary land transfer, or a ship swap where guests move between sister ships. In some cases, hotels, meals, and additional transportation are arranged. If no alternative exists, a sailing may be shortened or canceled. "The operational response can involve ships, captains, ports, buses, hotels, luggage teams, guides, meals and hundreds of guests—all moving at once," Heather said.
Heather emphasizes that river conditions are not completely predictable, as noted by Michele Saegesser, Viking's Senior Vice President of Sales. "Today's measurement is important, but it is not a guaranteed forecast for a sailing two or three weeks away," Heather said. While summer offers long daylight hours and attractive promotions, travelers should understand the risks. "Take the promotion—but understand the season you are buying," she advised.
Viking's scale is an advantage during disruptions. With 89 river vessels, including 59 Longships, the company has more options for vessel positioning and itinerary adjustments. Standardized layouts allow seamless ship swaps, and during the 2022 low-water conditions, 14 percent of Rhine sailings involved ship swaps with guest-quality ratings comparable to unaffected sailings. "That is one reason I recommend Viking," Heather said. "Its scale, similar ships and operational experience give it alternatives that may not be available to a company with only one or two vessels."
Travelers should avoid panicking based on headlines, assuming one location represents the entire river, or placing critical documents in checked luggage. They should document issues and contact their advisor promptly. For those booking directly, Heather advises having an independent advocate. "When Club Cruise is the advisor of record, our client has someone who can interpret the communication, document what occurred, contact the appropriate department and advocate for a reasonable resolution," she said.
Travelers with upcoming Viking cruises can request a complimentary review through the Viking Help Center by Club Cruise. Heather Viking and her team assist with current water level questions, existing booking reviews, and itinerary comparisons.
