The 2026 Duisburg China Festival commenced on Friday afternoon in Duisburg, Germany, featuring cultural booths and interactive zones from Chinese and German cities. The three-day event aims to strengthen bilateral ties, with Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province, presenting a vibrant display of its heritage.
On Friday evening, nearly 40 artists from Wuhan's top-tier performing arts troupes staged the festival's opening gala, delivering over a dozen programs including Peking opera, Hanju opera, Chuju opera, acrobatics, and ethnic song and dance. The performances offered German audiences a rich tapestry of Chinese culture.
Chang Haitao, acting consul general of the Chinese Consulate General in Dusseldorf, described the festival as "a vivid expression of exchange between China and Germany," providing Germans an up-close experience of China. The event underscores the deep-rooted connection between the two nations, which began in 1982 when Duisburg and Wuhan became sister cities—the first such partnership between Germany and China.
Duisburg Mayor Soeren Link praised the gala, calling it "unforgettable for its standard, quality, richness, and the many different facets it presented." He emphasized Duisburg's commitment to its sister-city relationship with Wuhan and expressed a desire to continue enhancing German-Chinese friendship and dialogue.
Markus Teuber, commissioner for China affairs at the Mayor's Office of Duisburg, noted that the performances provided an excellent window into Chinese culture and hoped for deeper cultural exchanges in the future. "The rich array of theatrical, song and dance performances brought by Wuhan offered German audiences an excellent window into Chinese culture," he said.
Yang Jing, deputy director of the Wuhan Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, highlighted the significance of Wuhan's participation, stating it "marks an important step in Wuhan culture's global outreach." The festival serves as an annual signature event, injecting grassroots momentum into the development of German-Chinese friendship.
