Utility provider UGI is urging homeowners and contractors to call 811 at least three business days before beginning any digging project, emphasizing the potential risks of underground utility line damage. According to a survey by the Common Ground Alliance, approximately 27 million U.S. homeowners plan to dig without first contacting utility services, putting themselves and their communities at significant risk.

Pennsylvania law requires all individuals, whether homeowners or professional contractors, to notify utility services before excavation. The free service allows utility companies to mark underground lines, including gas, water, sewer, electric, phone, and cable television, helping prevent accidental damage, serious injury, or potentially fatal accidents.

Chris Brown, UGI Utilities Vice President of Operations, stressed the importance of this safety measure: "Whether it is a small project or a major one, the same rule applies: call 811. It is an extra step to take before your shovel hits the ground, but it is an important one that could be a life saver."

Beyond underground utilities, UGI also reminds workers to remain cautious around above-ground electrical facilities, where any contact with power lines can be deadly. The organization encourages all individuals planning outdoor projects to prioritize safety by taking this simple but crucial precautionary step.
