The Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area (CSC) is set to transform cancer patient support with a new center that promises to provide comprehensive, holistic care beyond traditional medical treatment. Breaking ground on April 23, the organization will establish a six-acre facility near the Lafayette Reservoir designed to address the psychological and social challenges of cancer diagnosis.
The new center represents a significant milestone for the 35-year-old nonprofit, offering innovative support spaces including children and teen enrichment areas, support rooms with remote broadcast capabilities, a demonstration kitchen, counseling rooms, an expressive arts room, a movement studio, and a healing garden. This expansion reflects CSC's commitment to providing more than medical care, focusing on emotional and community-based support.
With an anonymous donor matching contributions up to $5 million, the organization has already raised over 75% of its campaign funds. CEO Lucinda Bazile emphasized that the center is about creating an atmosphere of understanding and hope, recognizing that cancer impacts not just individuals but entire families and communities.
The facility aims to increase access to free, culturally responsive support programs in-person, hybrid, and virtual formats. By providing comprehensive psychosocial support, CSC is addressing critical gaps in cancer care that extend beyond medical treatment, potentially improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
