Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area celebrated a major milestone this week with the groundbreaking of its new support center in Lafayette, California. The event, attended by over 200 community members and local dignitaries, marks the final phase of the organization's $30 million Capital Campaign titled "Rooted in Resilience."
The new six-acre campus, located adjacent to the Lafayette Reservoir, will significantly expand the organization's ability to provide comprehensive, no-cost supportive care programs for individuals and families affected by cancer. The center will feature innovative spaces including children and teen enrichment areas, support rooms, a demonstration kitchen, counseling rooms, art studios, a library, café, and healing gardens.
CEO Lucinda Bazile emphasized the broader significance of the project, stating that the groundbreaking represents "the beginning of a new era of compassion, innovation, and resilience in cancer support services." With $2.6 million remaining in their fundraising goal, the campaign has been bolstered by a $5 million anonymous donation match.
Local officials, including Lafayette Mayor Susan Candell and Congressman Mark DeSaulnier, praised the organization's commitment to addressing the comprehensive needs of cancer patients. State Senator Tim Grayson even named CSC SF Bay Area as the district's Nonprofit of the Year.
The new facility will leverage state-of-the-art technology to deliver in-person, virtual, hybrid, and on-demand culturally responsive programs. By expanding its reach, the organization aims to provide more comprehensive support to more communities across the Bay Area, entirely free of charge.
Since its founding in 1990, Cancer Support Community SF Bay Area has been dedicated to providing holistic support including counseling, support groups, nutrition guidance, exercise programs, emergency financial assistance, and specialized programs for children and teens. This new center represents a significant step in fulfilling that mission and supporting individuals and families navigating cancer.
