Better Youth, a social impact nonprofit, will showcase two compelling short films that challenge societal norms and amplify marginalized voices during its upcoming Reel To Real Global Screening on May 20, 2025.
The evening will feature two distinct works: 'Supershero: The Journey of Johna Rivers', a documentary chronicling a Watts native and former foster youth's transformation into a community advocate, and 'Born Again', a narrative short exploring complex family dynamics and identity through the lens of faith and acceptance.
These films represent more than artistic expression; they are powerful vehicles for challenging systemic barriers and providing representation for communities often overlooked in mainstream media. By centering stories of resilience and personal transformation, Better Youth aims to demonstrate the potential of creative storytelling to inspire social change.
Founded by Syd Stewart, the organization serves over 300 youth annually, offering no-cost apprenticeship programs in filmmaking, animation, interactive gaming, and project management. Their mission extends beyond technical training, focusing on holistic support that helps young people transition from surviving to thriving.
The film showcase underscores Better Youth's commitment to empowering foster and system-impacted youth as the next generation of creative leaders. By providing platforms for authentic storytelling, the organization seeks to break generational cycles and create pathways to professional success in creative industries.
