A rare piece of automotive history has been lovingly restored and is now on display at the DFW Car & Toy Museum. The 1949 Fiat 500B Topolino Giardiniera, part of the Ron Sturgeon Collection, represents a significant example of post-war European automotive engineering and design.
Pulled from a barn in 1996, the wagon underwent a comprehensive body-off restoration that transformed the vehicle. The refurbishment included a vibrant red paint finish, new wood panels, and a refreshed tan interior. A complete engine overhaul ensures the vehicle not only looks stunning but runs smoothly.
The Giardiniera is powered by a 569cc overhead-valve inline-four engine, generating 16.5 horsepower and paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Its design features front bucket seats, a foldable rear bench, and vintage details like sliding side windows and a two-spoke steering wheel.
This restoration highlights the importance of preserving automotive heritage, showcasing how careful maintenance can breathe new life into historic vehicles. For automotive enthusiasts and historians, such restorations provide invaluable insights into manufacturing techniques, design philosophies, and cultural automotive trends of the mid-20th century.
Visitors can view this exceptional vehicle among more than 200 cars and 3,000 collectibles at the museum, located in North Fort Worth.
