The American Heart Association is urging families to prioritize safety and health this summer by implementing four key strategies to address cardiac emergency preparedness. With 350,000 people experiencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrests annually and only 10% surviving, the organization highlights the critical importance of proactive measures.
Learning CPR emerges as a central recommendation, particularly as children are away from school and typical supervision. More than 23,000 children experience cardiac arrest each year, with nearly 40% related to sports activities. Immediate CPR can double or triple a person's chance of survival, yet less than half of cardiac arrest victims receive immediate assistance.
The Association's four-point strategy includes learning CPR, adopting a healthy family habit, planning ahead for medical needs, and engaging in community health initiatives. Specific recommendations range from taking online CPR courses to utilizing airport CPR training kiosks and focusing on the organization's Life's Essential 8™ health guidelines.
Walgreens has partnered with the American Heart Association as a national sponsor of the Nation of Lifesavers initiative, demonstrating a commitment to transforming bystanders into potential lifesavers. The long-term goal is to ensure communities are prepared to respond effectively during cardiac emergencies.
Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association, emphasized the importance of preparedness during summer months when typical support systems are disrupted. The organization aims to empower families with knowledge and confidence to perform CPR, potentially saving lives during unexpected medical crises.
