The Courageous Conservatives Political Action Committee (PAC) is set to confront a lawsuit filed by Rep. Pat Curry, which the PAC describes as a strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP). The PAC argues that the lawsuit is a politically motivated effort to silence criticism and suppress free speech, particularly concerning the election of the Texas House Speaker. The hearing, scheduled for June 6, 2025, in Waco, TX, will test the boundaries of free speech and political accountability.
Chris Ekstrom, Chairman of the Courageous Conservatives PAC, criticized the lawsuit as an abuse of power, aimed at intimidating those who hold elected officials accountable. The PAC has moved to dismiss the suit under the Texas Citizens Participation Act, which protects free speech, the right to petition, and freedom of association. The PAC's communications, which included texts and Facebook posts, encouraged civic participation and called on Curry's constituents to demand he honor his commitments.
Legal representatives for the PAC have pointed out the lack of legal merit in Curry's claims, emphasizing that the PAC's actions were lawful and protected under Texas law. The PAC is also seeking attorney’s fees and sanctions, arguing that the lawsuit is frivolous and retaliatory. This case highlights the tension between political accountability and the right to free speech, with potential implications for how public officials interact with their critics and the broader public discourse.
