The latest findings from the NAVEX 2025 Regional Whistleblowing & Incident Management Benchmark Report shed light on the evolving landscape of internal reporting across Europe, Asia Pacific (APAC), North America, and South America. Analyzing over 2.15 million reports from more than 4,000 organizations, the report reveals a global uptick in whistleblowing activities, with North America leading in report volume and Europe experiencing the most significant increase. This trend underscores the growing importance of internal reporting mechanisms in identifying and addressing organizational risks.
Regional disparities in case closure times and substantiation rates highlight the challenges organizations face in managing whistleblowing reports. Europe and APAC, despite receiving fewer reports, take considerably longer to resolve cases, with median closure times of 69 and 56 days, respectively, compared to North America's 19 days. The consistent substantiation rate of 45% to 48% across regions indicates that nearly half of all reports are valid, emphasizing the critical role of whistleblowing in uncovering misconduct.
The report also notes higher rates of anonymous reporting in Europe, APAC, and South America, suggesting a pervasive fear of retaliation among whistleblowers. This is particularly concerning given the EU Directive's focus on whistleblower protection, with Europe-based organizations substantiating retaliation cases at nearly double the rate of those in North America. The findings call attention to the need for stronger protections and more accessible reporting channels to encourage timely and open disclosures.
Differences in reporting channels and ownership types further illustrate the complexities of managing whistleblowing programs. The preference for hotline reporting in North America contrasts with the lower usage in Europe and APAC, while privately owned companies demonstrate higher substantiation rates than their publicly traded counterparts. These insights offer valuable benchmarks for organizations aiming to enhance their risk and compliance strategies, ensuring a safer and more transparent workplace environment.
