The Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA) has unveiled Version 8.1 of the Zero Waste Hierarchy of Highest and Best Use, a pivotal framework for Zero Waste strategy worldwide. Happy Stan’s Recycling Services Ltd. (HSR), a staunch advocate for sustainable resource management, has played a significant role in this update. The revised hierarchy introduces critical refinements to guide organizations, governments, and communities toward more sustainable practices.
Key updates in Version 8.1 include strengthened guidance under the 'Do Not Export Harm' principle, ensuring hazardous materials are not dispatched to regions ill-equipped to handle them responsibly. A new 'Do No Harm' principle has been introduced to minimize negative social and environmental impacts throughout the lifecycle of materials. Additionally, the update provides clearer definitions for terms such as 'circular economy', 'closed-loop systems', 'composting', and 'recycling', facilitating more consistent global application.
Jamie Kaminski, Chair of the ZWIA Zero Waste Hierarchy Working Group and President of HSR, emphasized the hierarchy's role in aligning global policies with the concept of Zero Waste. Gary Liss, Chair of the ZWIA Certifications Committee, highlighted the updates' relevance to contemporary issues like chemical recycling and the transition to a circular economy. Richard Anthony, President of ZWIA, reiterated the hierarchy's purpose as a model for resource conservation.
HSR's commitment to these updated standards underscores its dedication to responsible and ethical material handling. The full release and updated version of the Zero Waste Hierarchy are available for those seeking to implement these advanced sustainability strategies.
