African Voices Magazine Honors Harry Belafonte and Showcases Watson Mere's Art in Special Exhibition

African Voices magazine is set to host an opening exhibition for Brooklyn artist Watson Mere and a launch celebration for its special issue dedicated to the art and activism of Harry Belafonte on July 26, 2025. The event, free and open to the public, will feature contributions from the issue's writers, including Gia Anasi-Shakur, and serves as a fundraiser for the magazine following its defunding by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Publisher Carolyn A. Butts emphasized the significance of the event, noting Belafonte's role as a pioneer in using his platform for social justice during the Civil Rights era. The issue, guest-edited by award-winning poet Keisha-Gaye Anderson, reflects on the ongoing struggles for cultural preservation and access to essential services. Watson Mere's cover art for the issue pays homage to Belafonte's legacy, capturing his enduring influence on the Black diaspora.

African Voices, celebrating 33 years of promoting art and literature by artists of color, has partnered with Spelman College to archive its art collection, ensuring its accessibility for future generations. The magazine has a history of featuring prominent artists on its covers, including Faith Ringgold and Elizabeth Catlett. Mere, an award-winning artist, has exhibited globally and received numerous accolades for his work.

The event not only celebrates Belafonte's contributions but also underscores the importance of supporting cultural institutions like African Voices.
