Hong Kong Watch and Clock Design Competition Showcases Innovative Timepieces with Market Potential

The 42nd Hong Kong Watch and Clock Design Competition concluded as part of the 44th HKTDC Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and 13th Salon de TIME, attracting approximately 16,000 trade buyers from 95 countries and regions. Organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Limited, and The Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Limited, the competition received 116 entries across Open and Student groups, judged by industry experts and celebrity Bowie Cheung.

The Open Group theme "Memorable" challenged designers to capture emotions about unforgettable people through watch design. Winner Tam Kwok Tung's "FREEZE" design, sponsored by Wincy Horological Ltd, broke from tradition with a camera lens-inspired dial that reveals the movement and gear mechanisms. First runner-up Wong Ting Bong's "RB_ROBO", sponsored by Youngs Watch Company Limited and Po Fai Precision Company Limited, incorporated toy robot elements to preserve childlike innocence. Second runner-up Oro Time Limited's "Backtrack" featured swappable game cartridge elements inspired by Y2K nostalgia.

The Student Group theme "Believe in Yourself" encouraged designs showcasing confidence and perseverance. Winner Chan Tsz Ying from Hong Kong Design Institute created "Aspire", using moving beads to symbolize goal-chasing and still beads for reflection. First runner-up Lee Yuet Tung Eudora from Good Hope School incorporated "Love", "Hope", and "Faith" on the watch's outer ring, while second runner-up Yip Yuen Sze Christine from Hong Kong Design Institute used ripple patterns and a star hour hand to convey hope through life's challenges.

The Made-to-Sell Award, judged by veteran manufacturers and former HKTDC Assistant Executive Director Stephen Liang, recognized Chan Tsz Ying's "Aspire" for its strong market potential. The winning design will be produced and sold at the HKTDC Design Gallery, demonstrating the competition's direct commercial impact. This initiative supports the competition's broader goals of enhancing Hong Kong's watch design quality and boosting domestic and international sales through innovation.

The competition's results signal important industry trends toward emotional storytelling in design and investment in young talent. By bridging creative expression with commercial viability, the event positions Hong Kong as a leader in watch innovation while addressing evolving consumer preferences for personalized, meaningful timepieces. The integration of student works into production pipelines also highlights the industry's commitment to nurturing next-generation designers and maintaining competitive advantage in global markets.
