First Steps Developmental Services has opened a new early intervention center in Woburn that is now accepting new patients with no waiting lists, providing immediate access to evidence-based Applied Behavior Analysis services for young children with autism spectrum disorder and Down syndrome. The facility serves children ages 0–6 and is designed to support early developmental needs through individualized, developmentally appropriate ABA therapy that focuses on communication, social skills, and early learning during this foundational stage of development.
The center addresses a critical gap in access to early intervention services in the region, where demand for timely, high-quality services has been consistently unmet. Jarrod Scalzo, Founder and CEO of First Steps Developmental Services, explained the motivation behind the new facility. "There is a clear demand in this region for timely, high-quality early intervention services delivered by a team that truly listens to families," said Scalzo, who brings more than 20 years of experience in special education and early intervention as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. "I was inspired to start First Steps to help children make meaningful progress early in life and to empower parents and caregivers with the knowledge and support they need to advocate for their children."
The timing of the center's opening coincides with significant changes in insurance coverage for ABA therapy in Massachusetts. Beginning January 1, 2026, Massachusetts insurance providers are required to cover ABA therapy for individuals diagnosed with Down syndrome, expanding access to services for families across the state. First Steps accepts most major insurance plans for ABA services, making the therapy more accessible to families who previously faced financial barriers to early intervention.
The center is staffed by licensed Board Certified Behavior Analysts and highly trained support professionals who work closely with families and caregivers to develop individualized treatment plans. The facility is currently enrolling families from Middlesex, Essex, and Suffolk counties, serving a broad geographic area that has historically experienced limited access to specialized early intervention services.
The implications of this development are significant for families in the region who have previously faced lengthy waiting periods for essential early intervention services. Research consistently shows that early intervention during the critical developmental window of ages 0-6 can dramatically improve long-term outcomes for children with autism spectrum disorder and Down syndrome. By eliminating waiting lists, First Steps ensures that children can begin receiving evidence-based interventions at the optimal time for maximum developmental impact.
